About Willett Family Estate 7 Year Old Barrel 9688 Straight Rye Whiskey

One of the most exclusive whiskies on the market, Willett Family estate bourbons, and ryes are rarely released and when they are, they are mostly sold to private groups or retailers, making them very hard to obtain. Lately, several of their in-house barrels have reached maturation and we’re seeing more of the 4-year-old and 6-year-old releases, but still, Willett Family Estate spirits are referred to as Unicorn Whiskies. It’s not just the rarity that makes them so popular, it’s their distinct flavor. Any whiskey that has the honor of representing the Willett family estate name is an exceptional spirit. One of their absolute winners, a WFE 7 Years Old was made with a typical high rye mashbill of 74% rye, 11% corn, and 15% malted barley and aged in the white oak barrels in the family estate’s cellars in Kentucky for 7 years. The whiskey was hand bottled at 105.8 Proof but is surprisingly elegant for such a powerful whisky.

Don’t hesitate to try one of the best whiskies you can find out there!

About Willett

For the Willett family, distilling craft whiskey is a family tradition. John David Willlett began distilling at the Moore, Willett & Frenke Distillery just outside of Louisville, Kentucky, during Reconstruction. In 1898, his son, A. Lambert Willett — who was just 15 years old at the time — began apprenticing with his father. Eventually, Lambert purchased a farm on the outskirts of Bardstown, Kentucky, and began construction of the Willett Distilling Company in the spring of 1935. While Willett Distilling Company eventually changed its name to Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, the family tradition lives on. Even Kulsveen, the owner of KBD, is Willett’s son-in-law.

About Rye

As American as the bald eagle, rye whiskey was first brewed in the American Northeast in the 1600s. Even George Washington distilled it after leaving the Oval Office, so there’s no way of denying its origin.
It’s distinguished from bourbon for its original and unique spicy notes.

By law, rye whiskey must be made from at least 51% rye grain, aged in new and charred oak barrels for at least two years, and bottled at no more than 62,5% ABV.

Strong on the nose, this whiskey is loaded with aromas: there are notes of mint, vanilla, orange peel, anise, cotton candy, honey, pipe tobacco, and toasted oak. On the palette, you can taste orange, sugar, and fresh herbs, some water will bring out a sweet taste of berries. The finish is lingering and comes in the form of spice, cherry cola, and wood char. A tremendous find.
