About Highland Park 1968 Orcadian Vintage Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Situated in the Orkney archipelago in Northern Scotland, Highland Park Distillery was founded in 1798 by Magnus Eunson. The name of the distillery is derived not from the region of Scotland known as The Highlands — the Orkney islands are not a part of The Highlands — but rather from the region known as High Park, where the distillery was founded.Today, over two centuries after its founding, Highland Park Distillery remains one of the few Scottish distilleries that continues to hand-turn, malt, and peat its own barley. “You have to be careful here on the malting floor,” says Eric Tait, Highland Park's Maltman. “You find it can get a wee bit slippery underneath. I have to turn the malt every eight hours to prevent the roots getting tangled and to get it all aerated properly. The airing also helps it to grow. The malt will be on the floor for seven days and I'm running five floors at the moment.”
After malting the barley, Highland Park Distillery smokes it using peat sourced from Hobbister Moor, a peat bog located approximately seven miles from the distillery. Hobbister Moor peat is sourced from floral heather bushes, which burn hotter and cleaner than the grassy peats of Islay. In addition, the peat sourced from Hobbister Moor has greater derivatives of carbohydrates and a lower concentration of lignin than peat from Islay, giving Highland Park's peat a unique chemical fingerprint. The peat sourced from Hobbister Moor is “absolutely fundamental” in understanding the flavor of Highland Park Whisky, says Russell Anderson, the distillery manager. Together with Orkney's unique environment (the temperate, moist climate of the archipelago results in an even maturation process), the peat gives Highland Park Whisky its traditional malty, coastal flavors tempered by just a subtle touch of smoke.
Highland Park 1968 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the second release in the esteemed Orcadian Vintage series. Crafted from just eight hogshead barrels which were previously used for maturing Oloroso Sherry, the whisky was bottled in 2009, allowing four decades of weather on the Orkney Islands to exert its influence over the whisky. With its aromatic, heather-infused peat flavor, Highland Park 1968 represents a unique combination of smoky and sweet that has not p reviously been seen from Highland Park.
Highland Park 1968 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky has a bright, clean aroma of straw and salty sea air, which leads to a fruit-forward palate filled with lemon tart, plums, honey, cloves and just a hint of oak. The finish is equally compelling, with accents of toasted marshmallows and coconuts, as well as refreshing mint.

Situated in the Orkney archipelago in Northern Scotland, Highland Park Distillery was founded in 1798 by Magnus Eunson. The name of the distillery is derived not from the region of Scotland known as The Highlands — the Orkney islands are not a part of the Highlands — but rather from the region known as High Park, where the distillery was founded. Highland Park is an incredible longstanding whisky house, and they pride themselves on their rich Norse heritage, an essence that is reflected in their craft.Today, over two centuries after its founding, Highland Park Distillery remains one of the few Scottish distilleries that continues to hand-turn, malt, and peat its own barley, using locally cut peat from the nearby Hobbister Moor. The malt is peated to 20 parts per million phenols, and then mixed with unpeated malt produced on the Scottish mainland. After malting the barley, Highland Park Distillery smokes it using peat sourced from Hobbister Moor, a peat bog located approximately seven miles from the distillery.
Hobbister Moor peat is sourced from floral heather bushes, which burn hotter and cleaner than the grassy peats of Islay. The peat is "absolutely fundamental in understanding the flavor of Highland Park Whisky," says Russell Anderson, the distillery manager. The August 2019 release of the premium Highland Park 21 Year Old had Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion choose 3 different casks: first-fill sherry seasoned European Oak casks, first-fill sherry seasoned American oak casks, and refill casks. A total of just 15 casks went into this intense yet balanced expression. The first-fill casks take the center stage w ith the European oak bringing spice and dried fruit, the American oak ones adding vanilla and citrus. The whisky is bottled at 92 proof.

Highland Park distillery was founded by Whisky smuggler Magnus Eunson in 1798 and legend has it that he used his position as a church officer to conceal Whisky beneath the pulpit to keep it out of sight of interfering governmental types. What we do know for sure is that Highland Park is the northerly most distillery in Scotland — sitting way out on the island of Orkney in the far North Sea, just below the Arctic Circle. It’s as close to Iceland as it is to London.Because the name is “Highland Park,” it may be easy to think that means their whisky is made in the Highland style. But it’s quite different. In character, their spirit is closer to a midpoint between Lowland style and peated Islay single malts. And it’s signature style and dedication to superior quality keep it broad range of whiskies in high demand. Situated just a few miles north of Scotland's mainland, the Orkney archipelago was occupied by a number of different nomadic and belligerent tribes for centuries. In 875, however, the islands were annexed by Norway and settled by the Norse, who began using the archipelago as a base for Viking raids across Europe. In 1468, the islands were pledged by King Christian I of Norway as a dowry to James III of Scotland, and since then, the islands connection with Scotland has been perpetual. Highland Park Distillery is situated in Kirkwall — the capital of the Orkney islands — and was founded in 1798 by Magnus Eunson. The name of the distillery is derived not from the region of Scotland known as The Highlands (the Orkney islands are not a part of The Highlands) but rather from the region known as High Park, where the distillery was founded.Highland Park Odin is the final of four releases in the Valhalla Collection available from Highland Park Distillery. Odin pays homage to the eponymous Norse god, the dominant Allfather and King of Asgard known for his furious and intensely complex character. According to the distillery, “Odin is the strongest of all the Norse gods and driven by an unquenchable thirst for wisdom. The whisky itself is straw gold in color with an aroma of baked pineapple, honeyed graham cracker, grated ginger, and campfire smoke. Named for one of the most treacherous and mischievous characters in Norse mythology, Loki is a 15 year-old limited edition single malt whisky that was matured in both sherry casks and casks that were previously used to mature heavily peated whisky.
The whisky, much like the god it pays homage to, is intriguing and complex, and is housed in an award-winning wooden frame that echos the fearsome contours of a traditional Viking ship. While it has an aroma of citrus and spice, the palate is robust and chewy, with notes of intense smoke and hints of dried fruits. The smoke fades to notes of licorice and chocolate, and finishes with a touch of cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and hickory smoke.

The whisky itself is straw gold in color with an aroma of molasses, sweet cinnamon and raisins. Each year, the Jack Daniel's Distillery now erects a Barrel Tree — 140 barrels stacked 8 metres tall and hand-built by workers in Lynchburg — in the center of Lynchburg's town square. Once a year, whiskey from those barrels is then bottled straight from the Barrel Tree in a celebration of Jack Daniel's spirit, making each annual release truly one-of-a-kind.The whiskey is made from a mash of corn, rye and malted barley. Jack Daniel Distillery Rested Tennessee Rye Whiskey is crafted from a batch of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley (this mashbill is the first new mashbill used at the Jack Daniel Distillery Distillery in over a century). Once the ingredients have been mashed, they are fermented with a proprietary strain of yeast and iron-free cave spring water. Following fermentation, the wash is distilled and the resulting whiskey is then filtered through 10 feet of charcoal. This filtering process, known as the Lincoln County Process, earns the whiskey the title of "Tennessee Whiskey"and imparts a signature, sweet yet smoky flavor profile.Once the whiskey has been charcoal filtered, it is matured for two years in American oak casks. "We felt like we should offer our friends another limited-quantity rye expression that's still handcrafted with the same passion and quality they expect from all of our products," says Jeff Arnett, the master distiller at Jack Daniel Distillery Distillery. About James E. Pepper
Elijah Pepper began distilling whiskey at the dawn of the American Revolution and during the War of 1812, he built the first log cabin distillery in Versailles, Kentucky. Eventually, he passed the family business on to his son, Oscar, and then on to his grandson, James E. Pepper.Colonel James E. Pepper was one of Kentucky's first Bourbon aristocrats — he raced thoroughbreds in the Kentucky Derby, traveled in a private rail car and made famous the Old Fashioned cocktail. "Pepper Whisky is an old fashioned whisky, made in the old time way from a formula used for more than 100 years by three generations of the Pepper family," wrote James, in an advertisement dated August 22, 1887. "We claim not only to make the oldest but absolutely the purest and best brand of whisky made in America, and we invite comparison with any whisky of any age."
In 1958, after the whiskey industry fell on hard times, the James E. Pepper Distillery was forced to close its doors. During its tenure, Pepper Whiskey, or "Old 1776 Whiskey" as it became known as, was a favorite of Presidents Andrew Jackson and Ulysses S. Grant, and was preferred by Daniel Webster, a leading American statesman and senator from Massachusetts.
Today the re-launched brand is back in full force. "We did extensive research and spent years collecting and analyzing full, preserved bottles of original Pepper Whiskey," says Amir Peay. They even acquired a letter written by Pepper himself, detailing the exact mash bill and recipe used to create Old 1776. "We wanted to pay homage to Pepper's legacy and do our best to recreate the original Pepper Whiskey — something that was part of American history," he says.

First released in 1997, Jefferson’s has several offerings in their lineup, and utilizes very innovative and experimental blending and aging techniques. For example, their Jefferson’s Ocean expression is a bourbon, aged on a ship at sea, exposed to extreme weather conditions, crafting a truly distinct spirit.In the innovative spirit of aging Jefferson’s whiskeys in truly innovative ways and in various cask types, they have merged the sweetness of the Chateau Suduiraut wine and the toasted staves of those French oak wine casks with their well seasoned, complex Kentucky Straight Bourbon. This yielded the Jefferson’s Grand Selection Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes Cask.

The principal author of the Declaration of Independence and one of the most illustrious founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson was elected the third President of the United States in 1800. During his tenure as President, Jefferson authorized the purchase of the Louisiana Territory, dispatched Lewis and Clark westward to explore the remainder of the continent, and repealed the Whiskey Excise Tax.After Jefferson retired from public office in 1815, he often tended to the garden that he had cultivated at his Monticello estate. At the time, it was customary for wealthy farmers, including Jefferson, to make their own garden spirits. Each farmer's spirits were unique and reflected their personal tastes and the local terroir of their farm.
